technically, no, the Phantom doesn't die, he disappears. And since ALW is writting a sequel that takes place quite a few years later with Christine a big star in Europe married to Rauol, and then a mysterious stranger in New York lures her to New York, it winds up being the Phantom.

At least that is the end result in the musical version. I can't remember how the book or original movie ends.
