The rest of Costume Con

May 07, 2009 09:05

There were lots of pretty outfits at the con; I didn't take photos of many of them because, honestly, court Georgian is entirely Not. My. Thing. It's beautiful and I would love to make one but for someone else to wear as there is no place I would ever think of wearing one.

If you want to see pictures of stuff I didn't photograph this link at steamfashion has some nice links to photos.

Two views of attack_laurel in her steampunk werewolf huntress' outfit

Two views of a lovely late Victorian day dress

Two views of a lovely late Victorian gown. Probably my favorite outfit of the entire convention.

One of the few science fiction outfits I saw.

Don't know who/what she was but purple and silver is always a good combo! ;-p

Me before we headed out

I was going to wear this to Sheep and Wool but it was raining like a big dog and I changed.

Outifts I didn't get photos of: Me as Tonks; Me as Anya from the "bunnies" song in Once More with Feeling.

Overall, it was an enjoyable con. I liked hanging with shalandara and anotheranon. I liked meeting S.'s friend from Sunday drawing. And there were some really nice outfits I'm glad that I saw.

That said, I doubt I'll go again. Primarily because it had the feel of being a group of people getting together solely to show off to each other.

It felt very cliqueish. I didn't do cliques when I was a teenager and I don't do them now. I try to be inclusive.

The classes weren't very challenging. I went to two and they were great if you were just getting started. Having done this for ages, I need something more detailed, more meaty.

The dealers' rooms were sparse. I think I recognized a couple of people from NY Comic Con there. I bought 3 yrds. of trim from kass_rants and that's it. Nothing else called to me.

I thought that there would be a wider variety of outfits and just more outfits in general. This year was all late 18th/early 19th century all the time. And whilst I like a little bit of Regency occasionally, there was just too much of it.

I wanted more sci-fi stuff. I wanted a bigger variety. I wanted baseline outfits to be better. I saw a lot of kind of crappy outfits. There were some truly strange ones as well. It was hard not to go into Ren Faire "best, least, and worst dressed" mode.

So, the odds of me going to another one are slim. I'm not ruling it out though. There's one in NJ near NYC that's a possibility (primarily to get me up there to see buds, too), and there's Philly and possibly Pittsburgh.

I'm glad I went and had a nice weekend of hanging out but it didn't wow me like I'd kind of thought it might.
