Reading throvgh the other comments, there's been no svggestion of a different programme from all those 'gifted children' writers. So I'm thinking maybe ovr school systems work differently here in Avstralia :-)
You are describing classic ADHD behavior. I am married to an ADHD man and I am step-mother to a son who is now an ADHD college student. Both have very high IQs. Both are successful people...high-functioning when on task, yet disorganized slobs. My ADHD step-son was diagnosed in 3rd grade and given aderol. His grades went from failing grades to A's.
I just asked them both what they would recommend in your situation and they both said without hesitation to put him in the advanced class for higher stimulation. And give him aderol.
He definitely has those tendencies, but not in great enough degree to classify him as ADHD clinically. (That was considered in the psychologist's report, too--both parents and classroom teacher had to fill out long, detailed behavior questionnaires.)
I think we're going to try that, maybe after the holidays. It certainly sounds like he wouldn't be able to get the remediation for spelling if he went to the gifted school. Right now he's pulled out of classes three times a week along with a few other students for more work on spelling. I'm not sure which he needs more--spelling help or greater challenge in other areas.

Is there a chance that you can meet the teachers at the other school, observe classes, etc.?
