Alrighty then. Now that I have a little bit of time I will chronicle my time in Florida.
On Wednesday I was informed by
newyorkpoet that there was a mild tropical depression headed into Florida very near Miami. Upon discussing this with a coworker I decided that the best course of action was to change my flight to an earlier one. Instead of leaving at 3:40pm I left at 9am for Florida. This was great except for the fact that I hadn't actually packed and I would need to leave the house by 5am the next morning to get to the airport on time.
I proceed immdiately home, did tons of laundry and packed my bag. This part of the plan went rather smoothly except the oversleeping by 30 minutes the next morning. I did, however, make it to the airport with plenty of time to spare since I didn't need to check any baggage.
The plane was very comfortable. I was really preoccupied by what Miami would be like. I was also very nervous and excited about seeing
newyorkpoet again, so I really didn't pay much attention to my surroundings. I was quite thankful that I was able to channel surf on my personal little tv. I ended up watching a documentary about female serial killers.
The flight went fairly quickly and I was actually surprised when the pilot announced the initial descent into Ft. Lauderdale airspace. The entire flight was smooth except for the last 20 minutes or so. The wind picked up as we reached Ft. Lauderdale due to the storm that was coming in. I later learned that all flights after 1pm had been cancelled. Definitely a good thing that I had moved my flight up.
As I walked down the off ramp I was instantly hit with the hot muggy Florida air. My instinct was to retreat into the air conditioning, but I trudged along. Making my way through the airport, I met up with my ride just outside baggage area. As it turned out, Miami-Dade closed their schools due to the weather, so he was able to pick me up early.
As I settled into my seat, I kept sneaking looks at
newyorkpoet (henceforth known as J). I was very nervous. We hadn't seen each other in 2 months and even though we had been speaking on an almost daily basis for the entire time, I wasn't sure if he would remember me and my mannerisms. Another thing on my mind was that, as much as I wanted to kiss him, I wasn't sure if he felt the same. Rejection in the first hour of a 3 day trip was not exactly a great way to begin, so I held off.
The trip to his house took a few hours because he drove me around Miami showing me different places. I'm very glad that he did as we weren't really able to do much sightseeing the rest of the weekend. The pace was very leisurely and a great way to start the weekend.
Once at his apartment I met his roommate, S. She's an absolutely fantastic woman and an incredible artist. I fell in love with more than a few of her pieces almost instantneously. She made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in the door.
The weather was worsening so we decided to head out for some supplies. We stopped off at a drugstore for some things that I hadn't brought with me, and then again for beer. We spent the rest of the evening having our own little hurricane party. S decided that the best way to survive the hurricane was to get drunk and both J and I happily followed suit.
The wind started fairly weak and intensified during the night. Around 8pm or so we lost power so we spent a lot of time listening to J play the guitar and sang along with him when we knew the words. At one point it became eerily calm outside, although still dark. I presume that that was the eye of the hurricane passing over us and right after that the wind gusts got strong enough to make the two story apartment building shake. Now that was scary.
We survived the evening though. I ended up falling asleep around 1am, very much oblivious to the wind shaking the windows.
The next morning I woke up to a beautiful sky and lots of flooding. More on that later.
