The opening to this was excellent, it pulled me right in.

It's frightening to acknowledge the power money holds over people. My ex-brother-in-law ran a family-owned restaurant into the ground by embezzling profits and encouraging another of his brothers to steal directly from the till. It all but tore the entire family apart, and he still has no remorse over it. I just can't see how it's possible to screw loved ones over just for some damn cash, and yet it happens all the time.

I know how that is... my first stepmother did the same thing to my father. She racked up $34,000 in credit card debt, and later got arrested for embezzling $10,000+ from her job (she worked in accounts payable at a Toyota dealership). Thankfully my father kicked her to the curb, but not after having to file for bankruptcy and a host of other problems...

Sad, really sad.

If I remember correctly, the original Bible quote IS the "love of money" rather than just "money."

That's just unreal. Not buying her medicine? When she had millions? Taking money from charities when he probably would have received more than enough anyway? What an ASS.

Yes, exactly. I was commenting (albeit indirectly) that it is true, as opposed to some who just say money is the root of all evil (or women are the root of all evil, LOL).

I think.

Did that make sense? I know what I was trying to say.

And yes, Anthony Marshall is an asshat of the highest order.

Ah, I see. I thought maybe that's what you meant.

LOL @ women being the root of all evil. Of course us girls constantly get a bad rep.

A serious asshat. I just can't believe him. I mean, I can see stealing if you have nothing, or next to nothing. But squeezing more millions out of someone, and ABUSING them by withholding medical care? That's just fucked up.

The love of money is the root of all evil

Bravo. It is so true. It is hard to see a family that was basically the American equivalent of nobility fallen so far. I really wonder what happened to the son that make him such a putz.

Greed, I guess. He had it all, but it wasn't enough?

It's so sad to see this happen to the Astor family! From all accounts that I've ever read/heard of, John Jacob Astor IV was a great man - I hate to have his line disgraced in this way =(

You did a great job with this entry! The opening was fantastic - pulled me right in =D

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I, too, think it's sad what happened. There aren't kind, giving people like that anymore... not like it was 50 or 75 years ago, anyway. Now we have too much "stuff". Sad, really sad.
