I've been sick in three different ways in the last three weeks. No joke. Japan's germs are kicking my ass. It doesn't help that the weather's changing, although coolness is rather refreshing ( Read more... )

I have a friend getting a grad degree in Librarian Studies, she wants to work at the Library of Congress-- which I think sounds really kick ass. Though job-wise I think editor sounds better.
Have you tried writing? You could do some short stories first to see how you like it (it was how I discovered I was NOT a writer).
Personally, I've realized I could really enjoy making a living out of being a geek. I might go for a Capcom job in April. Have you thought about working for Tokyopop or Viz?

I have indeed often considered being a manga translator. I feel, however, that competition for such jobs probably lowers the salary to the point where I'd probably have to get a day job. I mean, if Viz asked me to I'd probably translate Glass Mask for free. I'd have to get a day job and do translation on the side...which is doable but not entirely desirable.

I enjoy writing, and I consider myself to have some skill in the area but I'm so lazy that I know I'd give up any project in a week.

By the way, what's your moving day? I'd love to hang out as soon as you get over here, and if it's a free day I could help you move in. And when I said I'd like to start a Sunday study group for JLPT, I meant it. :^)

What about getting a different job for one of those companies? Like something a little more business-y or web-oriented? I don't know if you're into that stuff, but you would definitely have to know your materials to do it, so you would still be reading a lot.
Actually, I didn't sign up either (money...), but I'm totally up for a study group.
I'm getting in on Thursday-- probably in the afternoon. I guess you have work that day though.
You're off on Friday, right? We could hang out then, if you're not dying of some horrible Japanese disease...

Cool, I'll share my JLPT2 kanji/vocab flash card set with you. I figure we gotta know those before trying the level 1 stuff. We can switch off whose apartment we meet at.

Yeah, I got work on Thursday, but we can meet up on Friday and get that suitcase back to you. Oh hey! You'll be here for Halloween, so you can see me in my band on the 30th. Keep that night open! :^D

Don't forget to try the Kansai Scene website for employment ads.

Dude, from the BEGINNING I thought you'd be a manga translator. Never crossed my mind you'd do something else. It'd be perfect for you.

....Plus I'd snag you to freelance for Tanjou :3

But seriously. Your skill is languages, learning and translating thereof. You have an astonishing ability to break the language barrier. If manga translating doesn't cut it, then look into translating books for publishing companies or translating magazines. It's like writing--do enough gigs and eventually you'll land a steady income. In the meantime, prepare to skimp.

Otherwise? Librarian is an interesting choice, but it does seem to require a degree. I have a friend who's getting a degree in it. I'm vague on that end, though. If you've got people skills (check) and memory skills (check check) you should do well.

Editors do get good money--once they make it to a publishing house. Again, it's all about the work it takes to get there. Soooo...think about it.

I thought you were looking into translating for the government, though?

Dang it, Amanda! It was you who got me sick! I was doing fine last night and then I read this and an hour later got violently ill! I'm blaming you and your Japanese germs.

Also, I finally got my computer back so once I'm feeling able to actually carry on a conversation we can talk! Hurrah!

The translator idea seems to be really made for you, you're really good in languages.....and with the influx of manga titles and our growing obsession with Japanese things, there could be jobs available...hopefully!!!! All kinds of things are being translated into other languages nowadays. The others do have potential for you, but I really would hope that you'd find some sort of Japanese connection with them.

Maybe somehow being in such a story-filled environment will motivate you to write yourself too!
