This is incredible. I finally have words after reading it half a dozen times.
1. I was NOT expecting this: He didn’t need to make that promise. Like, not at all. I don't think I even realized what happened until around the third read through. And it huuuuurt.
2. As if he thinks that if he never lets go, Sam will have to stay.
3. That stark description of Sam's death really hits you in the gut. I really like how you avoid wallowing in the angst, but still manage to bring the hurt so well. OMG.
4. And the two gunshots. And the hospital. And Rick. And all of it.
I am soooooo glad you liked it!! I was worried that since I didn't deliver much on the comfort, it wouldn't be a satisfying fill. But I'm very happy that you enjoyed it! :D
Yeah, I was aiming for the sort of stark feel with the way TWD handles their deaths, knowing that the pain is there, but it doesn't have to be expressed. I'm happy that came across.
And...yeah. Amelia and the baby don't survive this round DX Better luck on the show, I hope.
It's always kind of a hard balance to find, I think, between indulging and not getting too bogged down in the angst, but it definitely works here. I was feeling a lot of TWD, which is awesome. I'm actually kind of behind on the series, but this was a good catalyst to motivate me to catch up. XD
I don't know if it's "poor Amelia" or "poor Sam," mostly because we don't know much of anything about her yet (though in my headcanon she's awesome), but the idea of a sick and dying Sam sobbing all night hit me right in the feels.
