I was supposed to do a whole bunch of useful stuff today. I did some of it. But mostly I sat around and read Yuletide Treasure. So that's what I'm posting about :)
Sherlock Holmes crossover,
1918, but I won't say what it's crossing over with because that's part of the coolness. It wasn't written for
hca, but it could have been :) A brief encounter in 1918, at the end of two great men's careers and the beginning of another one's.
And now for something completely different - another crossover:
In Which Worlds Collide, and Eeyore Investigates a Terrible Crime.
Are You Being Served, a wonderfully fluffy and farcical old British sitcom.
Men's Trousers Down. The TV show had lots of visual comedy that it's hard to capture in a short story. This comes close, especially at the end.
Bridge of Birds,
Snakes and Sparrows. This is an incredible imitation of the original's style and tone. Funny and bawdy and implausible and poetic. And if you haven't read the original, well, go read it!
Chretien de Troyes,
Que j'aim mout. Written for
tarimanveri, spinning off of one of my favorite Arthurian stories, and using actual Old French. And how often is Yuletide fanfic relevant to my dissertation?
Er, well, at least twice this year, actually, because there's also a Song of Ice and Fire story,
Summer Without End, which talks about fostering. It does a little too much telling rather than showing, but it's a nice snapshot of things that must have happened, and I like the way it depicts the friendship.
The Incredibles,
As Close as Hands and Feet. For high school superheroes, talking to people at a party is scarier than dealing with supervillains. Sweet brother-sister interactions, and a mix of fantastic and ordinary that feels very true to the movie.
Little Women,
Comfort and Joy. Very very sad, but beautiful. I always liked Beth best.
Jeeves and Wooster,
Jeeves and the Christmas Spirit. Great tone, and very funny.
To Kill A Mockingbird,
Goes Marching. A little name-droppy, but I'll forgive it. Because where else would Atticus Finch's grandson be in 1965?
I was very pleased to see multiple Middleman fics!
The Superlative Elevation Alliance is hugely entertaining, and
The Ursine Therianthrope Divination gives an all-too-brief glimpse into the life of the Middleman himself.
Neil Gaiman, A Study in Emerald,
The Squid of the Baskervilles. If you haven't read Gaiman's story, go read it right now! It is an amazing piece of writing (and pretty much a crossover fanfic itself). And then come back to read this story, which is also excellent.
Pratchett's Discworld,
What Money Can't Buy. A sweet story of Young Sam's second Hogswatch, reminiscent of Pratchett in his more serious moods.
Quantum Leap,
Just in Time, a good mystery in itself that really feels like an episode of the show.
Slings and Arrows,
Lonely Hearts. Nothing can match the Shakespeare-in-motion magic of
No King of England, but this has some of the wonderful behind-the-scenes action. It's set after the end of the series. And it has lots of Anna, whom I've always liked.
