embroidery machine

I'm thinking of buying a embroidery machine.
So what I'm wondering is what people use them for. (I'm concerned I'll buy it an never use it) and what you have and how you like it. I'm looking to spend around $1000 on it and would prefer if it's compatable with my Mac.

Thanks!

E's mother has a high-end Viking embroidery machine but I don't know if she uses the embroidery functions all that much, and it doesn't really impress me for its other abilities--she had to borrow one of my Vikings once to sew a jacket seam that was too thick for her fancy machine. Cassandy has one, I think.

Cassandy did Marwen's wedding dress with her's and it was really nice. I wouldn't be using it as a sewing machine, I have one of those. or four. =)

Sandy's machine is fabulous for doing practically whatever embroidery you want. It has a software program where you can take something you drew and it translates it into the embroidery, complete with color coding so that it stops and prompts you for the next color thread. She's done a ton of stuff with it. I lust after that machine.

Katy Zabell has one I lust after. I think it's a Pfaff. It works as a sewing machine too, but I know she's done a lot with the embroidery.

I have a Husqvarna Quilt Designer II. Used it was $2800.00, and that was about 4-1/2 years ago. I absolutely adore my machine. It even threads the needle eyes for me. Mine uses a "D" card that I have to write designs to, I can't use my desings straight from my computer. The newer models do have computer direct hookups or USB sticks. Not sure if they work on Macs or not. My designing software is for Windows - I have 3D for designing software, not sure if it's the best or not but it does what I need it to do. The Quilt Designer II does both embroidery and sewing, and even though I have 3 other sewing machines, the H is by far my favorite and gets used more than the rest put together ( ... )
