Once upon a time, when I was a small child, my parents went to Hawaii on vacation and brought me back a pair of small shell earrings in the shape of seahorses. I liked them when I was a kid, but never wore them more than once or twice. Middle school, high school, and some of college pass - I have not worn them in probably ten years and one day I decided I'd put them on, just for fun. They still were not really my style, but it felt *right* that day.

That afternoon, I was on State Street, sitting eating ice cream, when a woman walking by stopped and exclaimed at how beautiful my earrings were and where could she get some. I told her they were from Hawaii twenty years ago and her face fell. I took them off and handed them to her - she didn't want to take them initially, but I insisted. I'd not worn them in so long, to have them want to be worn this day, they apparently needed to be hers. She didn't protest further and happily went away with the earrings my parents brought her from Hawaii.

Maybe it was like that.
