Don't let your employees vote before you see this." I'm too busy grading papers to follow up on the link, but I did want to note that my union is responsible for getting me pretty decent health/dental ( Read more... )

They don't take up significant bandwidth, and I often actually get something useful out of them.

When I was in training for Payless, they had us watch a video about how unions are evil and their only purpose is to trick you into giving them money for nothing. It is owned by Kroger, after all.

Hm, somehow I had only heard of Wal-mart doing that. I didn't realize the practice was so widespread. And a good thing it is, too--we wouldn't want to assume that people old enough to work might also be intelligent enough to be able to figure out for themselves whether or not they would benefit from forming/joining a union. A family friend works at Rutgers as a highly distinguished professor. However, he isn't going to get much of a pension at all because the union has hammered out a contract where the pension benefits must be exactly the same for all faculty and staff - so he will get the same pension and retirement benefits as the janitors.

I mean, there is equity and there is equity. I thought the idea was that professors were supposed to earn more and get more comprehensive benefits because they are more highly skilled labor, right?

Interesting. I'm guessing that the union represents the staff and not the faculty? At least I think that's typically the way it works--it seems as though the higher you move up the pay/skill scale, the less likely you are to be represented by any kind of union or worker association. Maybe the faculty should organize. :P ( ... )
