My academic adviser is retiring at the end of the semester. Gasp. I'll talk with him tomorrow about where to go from here (not sure yet if he's still going to be around for me, or whether I need to find a new head adviser). I knew it was coming, but still it feels a little unsettling. Good for him, though--he's earned it for sure.

Well, I knew I was the last student he was taking on and that he'd be retiring soon, but it came on kind of unexpectedly. I went in today to chat, and I guess he has some personal/health-related reasons for doing it mid-year. :( I hope he'll be ok.

Do you need more than one in grad school?

I'm not sure if it's typical, but here we have a main adviser and a co-adviser. Depending on the particulars of the relationship, the co-adviser can be a second person to consult for academic issues or just someone to sign off on bureaucratic documents if the main adviser is out of town or on sabbatical.
