Title: No Faith
Fandom: CSI:Miami
Characters/Pairing: Horatio Caine
Words: 292
Spoilers: None
Rating: PG-13
A/N: If you're a fan of Dexter on Showtime, this crime scene might sound familiar. A crossover of sorts. I wrote this awhile ago for a prompt-based community, but never really published it anywhere.

Faith must have adequate evidence, else it is mere superstition. - Alexander Hodge.

No Faith

Lt. Horatio Caine frowned and removed his sunglasses.

Something about this crime scene wasn't right. There was no blood, but clearly the victim's throat had been slashed ear to ear. He didn't like to make hypotheses without all the evidence. This couldn't have been where the murder took place. Not unless the killer had taken the time to wrap the room in plastic and then cleaned up after himself. Most killers would not do that.

At least not in Horatio's experience.

Each case was different, but he found that there were common behaviors that tied them all together. Jealousy. Anger. Betrayal. Love. Greed. Fear. Grief. Of the hundreds of suspects Horatio had dealt with, each one of them had blamed emotion for their actions. It was consistent, almost predictable in nature. Motive was always the result of a weakness.

The fact was, humans were broken beings.

This killer had outdone himself. Horatio and his team found very few clues at the scene, nothing to lead them in the direction the killer had gone. The case was growing cold before it had really started. He wasn't relishing the task of explaining to the victim's parents that there was simply nothing more he could do.

There was no apparent motive.

Nothing predictable. No emotion. All traces of humanity were missing from the crime scene. As he flipped through the photographs for the hundredth time, Horatio found himself doubting many of the things he had come to believe in. In his head, Horatio could hear the killer laughing at him. Taunting him. His faith was damaged, but then he was never sure if he had had the faith to begin with. He let the photographs fall to his desk.

The victim's voice had become silent.
