4. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh

I don't know what I was expecting when I picked this up to read. I'm not even really sure why I chose it - I was poking through my BBC Big Read book, and something about it struck a chord with me. Probably the idea of the estate over time, but the book isn't really about the estate at all.

Blame may be pointed toward Downton Abbey having me in a country house driven story mode.

But it wasn't anything like that, because it is really (but not persistently throughout) a commentary on Catholicism.

I...hrm...

I liked this book; I may even read it again someday. I think it is the type of thing you have to read fully, then ponder, the go back and re-read knowing what you know to feel the full weight of it. I think there are things hiding in there, things that may not be pointed out as much if you read and discuss this book in a class, but that you aren't going to get the first time.

This book may have layers. And we all know (that is the royal we - I don't know if or how long ago I've discussed my fascination with layers) how much I like layers.

Yes, I finished two books today. I feel accomplished.
