I don't know that they're the same kind, but every now and then we find them up here--usually in less-cultivated areas. I can't imagine having a yard full of them--I'd go nuts!

The pictures I found made me think of what I grew up knowing as boobelice (spelling uncertain; pronounced boob-a-lease). This was in South Jersey. The burrs look remarkably familiar. Ick. Suck. Fortunately not endemic.
