I look at Meg's costume and all I see is Vegas showgirl, although admittedly that could be partially because I'm used to seeing vintage costumes in black and white.
But actually, her costume really was relatively tame for the day; before the movies started taking over in a big way, things could get pretty damned rude by modern standards. It's really why we now have a comics code, movie rating systems, all that good stuff. Here, a few photos from back in the day (I think more or less contemporary with whenever the hell this is taking place-- and when will ALW learn to set dates internally to guide costume etc choices, but to leave then out of the public eye? Really, his (mis)use of dates just shows off to an embarrassing level how poor he is at both math and history).
This first one is the famous Mata Hari; I include her even though she's got a top o simply because her costume vaguely reminds me of Meg's:

Huh, some of those look more 1920s to my eyes. I'd heard going topless was still pretty much too hot to handle in the first decade of the 20th century, but I could be wrong...
Point no. 3? THIS. You summed up all my ranting on that topic so well! I think that's what annoys me the most, the fact that they make it so normal that he worked in a freak show. Read/watch/listen to ANY version of Phantom- none of them are pimping themselves out as an attraction. It's just not right.
Regarding the costumes, just watch footage from when the Moulin Rouge was starting out as a dance hall. There were pretty much orgies happening on stage, forget any semblance of costume!
Just found your review of the CD and am loving it. Especially this: 4.) “She chose Raoul/Chose his beauty and youth.” I think the whole not-psychotic thing may have also come into play there, really. Seriously, I hate it when people think Christine’s only hang-up about the Phantom was his looks-did nobody pay attention to that whole “true distortion” line?
Thank you. I hate how that (as well as most of the Phantom's negative characteristics) always seems to be overlooked by so many fans.
