After class yesterday, Anne and her still-overgrown hair had gone back to hiding in bed -- a decision that would undoubtedly have greatly scandalized Marilla, although perhaps not as greatly as Anne herself would have been scandalized to see the posters for the "girlkissy party." Evie having spent the morning half-relieved her name didn't make it onto the Radio for flagrant disregard of rules, and half-wondering if she should go confess to same rule-breaking, had decided to table the whole subject in favor of checking in on one of the new students.

It was a very disheveled and pitiful looking Anne indeed who, after a rather pregnant delay of several seconds, opened the door just enough for Evie to let herself in, then dashed back to hide her head under the covers again.

"Oh, don't look at me," came the forlorn voice from beneath the quilt.

"The principal called me a dreadfully insulting name," Anne said mournfully, pulling the covers back just enough to be able to breathe. "And then -- oh, I know I've a horrible temper, and I'm far too sensitive about my red hair, and I oughtn't have told her she looked like a pot-bellied stove, but she had no right to make my hair grow like that!"

Cedric wandered into the room, engrossed in a book and said, "Hello, Anne," without looking up just yet.

"Hello, Cedric," returned dispirited Anne, back to hiding beneath the covers. "How is your weekend so far?"

Unspoken, but perhaps clearly implied, was that she was sure it had to be better than hers. Behold the power of emo, even for someone from a time long before the term was invented.

"It's well," he said, finally looking and frowning. "Are you all right, Anne?"

"Quite well, for someone contemplating never setting foot in public again," she replied. "I'm sure a judgment on me for my vanity was in order, but on the other hand there is such a thing as too cruel."
