Force is proportional to acceleration (or deceleration) - that's Newton's Second Law of Motion - so the amount of force would vary depending upon how quickly you wanted to stop the object in motion. Applying more force would stop the object more quickly.

and too much would not stop it but instead propele it in the opposite direction with equal force.
