Hope & Reality
Helen sat on the floor of the Sanctuary lab and wept. Ashley had been herself for a moment and saved her mother from the other superabnormal who was intent on killing her. Helen was certain that Ashley knew the EM field was up and teleporting would most certainly kill her, but she had done it to save her mother.
John and Will ran into the lab soon after and as Will ran to Kate, John was focused only on the distraught Helen. As Will led Kate to the infirmary, John knelt in front of Helen who, without hesitation, buried herself in his arms, resting her head on his chest. He didn’t have to ask if Ashley was dead. He knew Helen would never be in this state otherwise.
“John…she was here. She knew who she was…she called me Mum.” Helen whispered through her tears. “She saved my life and sacrificed her own!”
“Hush my love.” John said softly. He wrapped one arm tightly around her, the other hand ran through her long dark hair. There they stayed until Helen calmed in his arms. “Come, Helen” he whispered as he helped her to her feet and led her out of the lab.
He took her to her bedroom and sat her down on the bed. He thought perhaps he should have taken her to the infirmary due to the slashes on her arm, but he knew Helen would not have wanted anyone to see her in this state. He took her head in his hands, kissed her forehead and said, “I’m going to find some supplies to take care of your injury.”
“Don’t leave John.” Helen begged softly.
“I’ll return straight away. Lie down and rest Helen.” he said as he gently forced her to lie down.
John returned with bandages, hydrogen peroxide and a bottle of brandy. He helped her remove her jacket and gently applied the hydrogen peroxide to clean the wounds, which caused her to wince. “Sorry.” John said. He poured a glass of brandy and handed it to Helen.
“She’s not gone. She can’t be.” Helen said and took a healthy pull of the brandy.
“Helen…she can’t have survived teleporting with the EM field active.” John softly replied as he bandaged her arm as gently as he could. Helen took another drink as her eyes filled with tears again. John sat down beside her on the bed, put his arm around her and she leaned into him, her head on his shoulder.
“This is my fault. What kind of mother am I to expose my own child to the kind of danger I did?” Helen cried softly, blue eyes spilling over.
As John stroked her dark hair he replied in a low voice, “You are a wonderful mother Helen. The Cabal are to blame and trust me, they will pay for what they have done.” He turned to her and gently took her head in his hands. “Trust me.” Then he softly kissed her lips and Helen did not resist. She needed to be close to him now, though she may regret it in the morning. Their kiss became deeper, more intense.
She pulled away suddenly. “The others…” she said, a little breathlessly.
“The others are fine.” John assured her as he took the brandy from her hand and set it on the night table. He gazed into Helen’s beautiful blue eyes that were still filled with tears. He wanted nothing more at the moment than to relieve her of her grief, if only for a short time. He leaned in again and kissed her deeply. Helen responded with a small whimper and he knew she would probably regret this in the morning, but not tonight. They slowly undressed each other and as they did, touched and kissed and nipped softly. He gently laid her down, never taking his lips from hers. Their lovemaking was intense, passionate and almost more than John could take. He loved this woman with every fibre of his being, but he knew tomorrow he would leave to take his revenge on the Cabal and she would very likely be angry. But tonight, they would be together in her bed and he would hold his Helen while she slept. He couldn’t ask for more than that just now.
In the morning Helen awakened first, her body tangled with John’s. “God what have I done?” she muttered sleepily as she looked at him. She admitted to herself that she loved this man beyond reason, loved waking next to him, but at the same time felt those emotions should be wrong. Her feelings for him would always be confusing. Suddenly, like a blow to her belly, the events of the previous day came crashing in and tears rushed to her eyes again.
She moved to get out of bed but an awakening John held her waist. “Helen…stay.” he said.
“I have to check on the others.” she said, although she really didn’t want them to see her weakened. She pulled away from John’s hold and went to shower and prepare herself for the day ahead. When they were showered and dressed and Helen composed, John wrapped his arms around her and held her close, but she pulled away. “I really must see how the others are getting on. Kate was hurt last night.” She turned and quickly left the room.
Later that evening, when Helen returned to her room, John was waiting for her and she immediately moved into his arms. He stroked her hair and broached the subject of a memorial for their daughter. She lifted her head to look into his blue eyes and pulled away. “No. Not yet. I have something to tell you! There’s still a possibility that she’s alive!” she said excitedly. She paced the room as she relayed to John what she had been thinking about all day.
“Helen…no. You created the EM field to keep me out. It’s not possible. Don’t do this to yourself.” he replied, his voice rising with a warning edge.
“I admit the possibility is remote but if there’s a chance…” she said with excitement, her own voice rising. They argued for some time and John worried about this tumble into denial.
Finally, John moved behind her, tightly wrapped his arms around her and whispered with a growl into her hair, “Stop this. She tried to pull away from him but gave up and softened in his arms. She turned around and looked into his eyes. “I must leave now.” he told her.
“John…” she shook her head, “No. Not yet. I need you here with me now. Please.” she pleaded.
Never had he heard words he wanted more. But the rage was growing, he needed to avenge the daughter he’d been robbed of. “I will be back.” he whispered as he pulled Helen to him and kissed her. Again, she didn’t resist and wrapped her arms around his waist. In some way, Helen wanted John to succeed in viciously killing off the Cabal, but it took him away from her just when she needed him the most. John reluctantly pulled away from her.
“I don’t want you to do this John. It won’t change anything.” Helen said quietly, tears filling her eyes.
“I must. You know that much of me. I love you with all that I am. For all eternity.” he said softly, smiling, as he brushed his hand against her face. And in a flash of red he was gone.
