conventions ROCK. Lots of people, all with the same interests, most of them don't know a whole bunch of people, so are open to making new friends. I don't know all of your interests, but I'm sure there are a few role-playing and anime cons that are close to you each year. If you can come to DC, Katsucon happens every March, and has about 7000 attendees. I'm not a huge anime fan (I like a couple of them), but enjoyed people-watching from actoss the street at the hacker con I was at that weekend.

I went to Katsucon 9 years ago. It was fun, but not spectacular enough for me to want to go again. Cons are a good idea, i think i just need to find the right type.
