Title: Better than Candy
Pair: Clex
Four of Seven Clexmas ficlets for the True Love Fest.
Prompt: Candy

“They have marshmallow hearts on a stick?”

“Are you serious?”

“Okay, no marshmallows on a stick. They have these little hearts with messages-”

“No.”

“Hm. I guess I agree. Those taste terrible. How about the cinnamon heart candies? They’re chewy. And cinnamony.”

“I’ve never tried them. Are they good?”

“You should be here picking these out, you know.”

“I would if that were possible.”

“Don’t be mad.”

“I’m not mad. I’m sick. I wish I weren’t, so I could come help you pick out your candy. You’re the one who wanted it. Get what you like.”

“You are mad.”

Clark sighed. He’d come out today to get a little something to make Lex feel better, and he was starting to feel like Lex didn’t really want to be fussed over. That was nearly impossible, though. Neither of them were used to Lex being ill, and Clark was worried.

He dropped a few things in his basket, then smiled warmly. “I’ll be home in a few minutes.”

“Good. Did you find what you were looking for?”

“Yep. Talk to you in a few.”

Moments later Clark appeared in the bedroom. Lex was laying on the bed, curled on his side near the edge, likely in case he started throwing up again. There was an IV attached to his arm, and it looked as though his doctor had left him alone for a while. That was a good sign. At first they’d thought it was just morning sickness, but when it turned out to be more than that, Clark had all but panicked. He would have been concerned about any virus that managed to lay Lex up, given that his mutation specifically fought against that kind of thing, to the point that his immune system rejected his own hair. It seemed that when his body had lowered its defenses, not rejecting the fetus, it had also let a virus sneak in. Since Lex was pregnant, Clark thought about it all the time, hoping that Lex’s symptoms would stop, and he could start to enjoy the thought of their growing family.

“You awake?” Clark whispered. He set the red bag beside the bed and leaned over Lex. His face was burrowed in the crook of his arm, and his book was open in his lax hand. Clark caressed the curve of Lex’s cheekbone, then let his fingertips drift down his jawline.

Lex’s eyes opened slow, frowning grumpily. His lips were dry and cracked, so Clark picked up the bottle of water that Lex had beside the bed and pressed it to his lips. Lex drank gratefully for a moment, then pulled back.

“I love water. Have I ever told you that?”

“When you feel better, I’ll take you down to the pool.”

“I think you’re earning sainthood, lately. But please don’t mention the pool right now.”

“Oh?”

“Chlorine smell... wave motio- Uh...” Lex leaned over the bed and gagged.

Although he wasn’t throwing anything up, it was hard for Clark to see Lex heaving like that. What an awful combination, flu and morning sickness. He rubbed Lex’s back in wide circles and sighed.

“This blows, to turn a phrase,” Lex grumbled.

Clark kissed his cheek tenderly.

“Talk to me. Tell me what you got.”

Clark sat on the edge of the bed and opened up the bag. “Well, for me I got some of those cinnamon hearts, and then some peanut butter and chocolate hearts...”

Lex made a face, and when Clark looked up, Lex tried to mask the expression with feigned interest.

“Yeah, I didn’t think you’d have an appetite for that. I don’t know that you’ll be able to eat anything soon. But aside from the chocolate and stuff, I got you these.” Clark pulled out a heart shaped package with pink/white and red/white cookies inside.

“I’m not sure... what those are?”

“Ginger cookies with icing. Ginger is good for dealing with nausea, right? Only I heard you shouldn’t be having too much of it. I thought these might help... once you get to the point of eating solid food again, that is.” Clark raised both brows and looked at Lex hopefully.

Clark had honestly expected Lex to snap at him. Snappish had definitely been a major descriptor of late. But Clark figured that if he were unexpectedly pregnant, and then even more unexpectedly ill the moment that he’d gotten used to the first bit, he would probably bite Lex’s head off all the time too.

Instead, a little smile began to etch its way across Lex’s lips. He pushed himself up onto his elbow and looked at Clark with a long-lost fondness. “Can I have a little taste?”

“What?”

“I don’t think I can really keep much down, but maybe a bite wouldn’t hurt?”

Grinning dopily, Clark cracked the case open and picked a red and white cookie. He held it to Lex’s lips and watched with keen interest as they parted around the cookie while Lex nibbled on it. He didn’t take much, and touched his lips after pulling back.

“They’re nice, Clark. Thank you for thinking of me.” Lex was smiling. It was a Valentine’s Day miracle.

“I’m glad it made you happy.” Clark beamed.

“Put that aside, and lay down with me?”

Clark didn’t need any other convincing; he set the nibbled on cookie next to Lex’s water on the nightstand and crawled up onto the bed with Lex, kicking off his shoes. He made himself snug next to Lex, and wrapped his big arms around Lex.

“You’re warm.”

“Is that good?” Remembering Lex’s fever the night before made Clark wonder if he’d be welcome in the bed, despite the invitation.

“For now it is. I was cold before you came in, but didn’t want to get up to get a blanket.”

“That’s me.” Clark kissed Lex’s neck and rubbed his hand over Lex’s tender tummy. “Just try to relax.”

“Mmm.”

After several moments, when Clark thought that Lex had dozed off again, he whispered, “Clark?”

“Yeah, Lex?”

“This is better than candy.”
