“I don’t want you to go. Don’t go.”

Blaine turned from the closet, where he had been pulling out an extra sweater. Kurt perched on the end of the bed, fully dressed and holding Pippa tightly to his chest. She was starting to whine a little, likely due to how wound up Kurt seemed to be.

“Please,” he whispered, with a little self-effacing smile. “Don’t out there. Don’t go. Don’t leave.”

Blaine dropped the sweater. “What is it? Are you... Do you feel okay? Is it the Peanut?”

He kissed Pippa’s head and motioned for Kurt to hand her to him, but Kurt didn’t move. He just looked up at Blaine, with alarm in his eyes. Blaine moved his fingers over the frown lines on Kurt’s forehead and leaned over to kiss him between his furrowed brows right above his glasses.

“Nothing’s wrong. Pippa’s feeding well and seems happy. I feel fine. Good, actually. I just don’t...” Kurt lowered his eyes. “This is stupid. Selfish.”

“No, it’s not.” Blaine nuzzled his face against Kurt’s. “If you were the one going out there, I’d be the same way. Remember the mall?”

“One wrong move...”

As Kurt’s voice trailed off, Blaine sat beside him, snaked an arm around his back and rested his head on his shoulder. “Did you have a dream?”

“I have all kinds of dreams. They’re not like yours.”

Blaine licked his lips. They’d never really talked about the surreal reality of his “dream” the night they bolted from the refugee housing. Had it been chance? Could Blaine trust his instincts? How could he, when he had the same ridiculous, terrifying PTSD-induced nightmares as everyone else?

“I could sit this one out. Tell Mike to wait for another day.”

“I liked it better when you were on the wall.”

“Having a team together is safer than just having two. They need... Well, maybe they don’t need me. Finn could just as easily go.”

“Finn is a giant. And clumsy.” Kurt sighed and bounced Pippa and patted her back as she began to fuss again. “Hush, sweetheart. It’s okay. I’m sorry.”

Blaine stroked her cheek with a finger and made a hamster face and clicking noise at her. Pippa exploded with giggles and reached for him.

“Oh, your daddy,” Kurt admonished. He lifted her up and gave her to Blaine.

“Ba ba ba ba,” Blaine chanted at her, causing more giggles and a reluctant smile from Kurt.

“You’re perfect,” Kurt whispered. His fingers moved through the curly hair on the back of Blaine’s head, and he kissed his temple. Then he petted Pippa’s soft, black curls, which matched her father’s. He rose and left the room.

Blaine bit the inside of his cheek. They weren’t fighting, but he felt bad nonetheless. Maybe it was sympathy. Though Kurt kept his fighting skills sharp, it was hard not to be able to contribute, and especially hard to let people you loved go out into danger instead of yourself. This had been a longstanding unease, first realized, maybe, when Kurt had been forced to leave their campsite to protect himself and their growing baby inside him. Until the world changed again, that wasn’t going to go away.

Lifting Pippa up, Blaine went out into the main room, where Kurt was leaning over the couch, both palms spread over the back of it.

Saffire was curled up in a chair watching Kurt anxiously.

“Hey, Saff,” Blaine said softly.

Her eyes flickered to him.

“Do you mind watching the Pip for a minute? I’m going to put her in her pen, because she looks like she wants to play a little, but she still needs someone there to keep an eye on her.”

“Yes!” Saff jumped up and hurried over.

Blaine smiled and allowed her to take the baby. Then he went over to Kurt, took his hand, and met his eye. Kurt let Blaine lead him out of the house, and the two of them huddled together as they walked.

“You’re not selfish.”

Kurt said nothing.

Blaine squeezed his shoulders with one arm, and took his hand with the other. Their fingers interlocked, and almost simultaneously, they rested their heads against one another.

“I know this isn’t rational, Blaine. I can deal with it.”

“I’m glad you said something about how you felt, though. We can... I’ll talk to the others. Maybe we can make it... more safe?”

Kurt’s head moved forward just a bit.

“We have to get supplies-”

“You guys do not have to go out scouting as often as you do. It’s risky. Spring is coming. It’s still cold, but not safe. Not freezing. There will be more of them, and you could run into survivors. Anything can happen out there.”

Blaine squeezed Kurt harder. He stopped them behind a house and turned to face him. Kurt’s arms went around his waist, and Blaine held him close. Their foreheads touched.

“I love you, Kurt.”

Kurt sighed heavily, and answered by kissing him hard, grabbing the side of his face, pressing into him. Blaine responded in kind. Little puffs of white escaped between kisses and panting, surrounding them like little ghosts.

“Don’t go. Not today,” Kurt begged. He begged.

And Blaine grew weak. His knees were jelly, and he had to lean into Kurt. He pressed his cheek against Kurt’s and breathed in and out, slowly.

Then he dropped down to one knee and looked up at Kurt. Kurt’s brow raised curiously.

“Marry me. For real. I’m sorry I don’t have a ring-”

Kurt lowered himself to his knees, grabbed Blaine’s face with both hands, and kissed him again. Then he gave him a hard look.

“Are you just trying to distract me from being scared?”

“No!”

“It would still be sweet if you were,” Kurt added in a dry tone. “Annoying, but sweet.”

“I just... I want the world, what’s left of it, to know that we are forever.”

“Nothing is forever. I’ve known that for a long time.” Kurt rubbed Blaine’s cold hands in his own.

“You’re the love of my life, Kurt. Do you remember...? When we uh... In the produce cooler...” Blaine’s voice faltered. He dipped his head and blinked, then smiled remembering that terrible, wonderful night. “You said...”

“What?”

“I can’t remember the exact words,” Blaine choked out. A tear trickled down his cheek, and Kurt brushed it away lovingly. “You said... They can’t touch what we have.”

“Oh!” Kurt smacked Blaine’s shoulder.

Blaine opened his mouth in surprise, but then Kurt moved his hand to his eyes and sniffed.

“Dammit. Yes.” More tears came, and Kurt laughed softly.

“You remember,” Blaine whispered, smiling again.

“I mean, yes, let’s do it. Let’s stop talking about it, and do it. We’re in Canada, eh?” Kurt giggled and moved his hands over the sides of Blaine’s face, then onto his shoulders, and he pulled Blaine into a vice-like hug and hooked his chin over Blaine’s shoulder.

Blaine combed his fingers through the back of Kurt’s hair, then petted his back, breathing softly and feeling his warmth. When they felt capable of parting, he would go tell Mike there would be no scouting today. They were going to plan a wedding.
