Sticky For Future Thought

 Is there ever a right time that if you disagree with what a pastor or priest is saying that you get up and walk out of a church service? Is that right, or disruptive? Or is that vanity? What issues do you just sit in a pew and recognize that it's minor and what issues, if any, do you chose to take a stand on? Because spiritual growth s good, and ( Read more... )

I guess it depends on the issue? I have, but it was at a big conference and nobody would have really noticed. I'd love to hear what issue you were thinking about taking a stand on, if there was one.

I almost got up and walked out of Philip's church once when a bunch of ignorant things were being said. I was furious, but I stayed in my seat. I think it would be different, though, if you didn't personally know or have a relationship with the people who were saying the ignorant things.

Besides that major time (and plenty of small other ones at Philip's church) I've never had that kind of issue in a church.

But taking a definite stand for what you believe is important. After that Shabbat was over, Philip and I did take a stand and talk to people and write a formal argument about it. Whether or not it did any good, however, is still yet to be realized...

What is the purpose behind you walking out of the service? If it is to make your displeasure known, I suppose that works well, but it does little that is useful besides that, and it also antagonizes people without a further purpose. If you want the pastor or priest to recognize *why* you disagree, then you need to choose a more constructive approach, as Ricki indicated she and Philip have attempted recently. (What that more constructive approach might be for you, I have no idea; I don't have any of the religious background necessary to give you informed advice, or to even extrapolate what might upset you to such a degree.) If you aren't prepared to either antagonize or criticize constructively, then you may want to think on your objections until you can decide an effective approach, as you seem to be doing currently ( ... )
