Having taught Life of Pi to a class of 100 level English students, I consider myself a bit more of an expert than most. I think by the phrase, "a story that will make you believe in God," Martel is not literally saying that it will inspire belief. Rather, the story is an argument for why believing in God is preferable to believing in nothing. A belief in the divine gives hope, purpose, and a feeling that you are special and someone is looking out for you-whether or not God is real. So I agree that it's about faith in general and not religion in specific.
