♛ in depth
Personality: Despite choosing to leave her old life behind, Aravis still retains her pride as a Tarkheena and will even occasionally still refer to herself as such. Old habits die hard, after all, and acting like a commoner after being treated like a princess for 12 years is not the easiest task. Though she has managed to improve in that aspect during her one year in Estrasia, she's still an arrogant and stubborn person and can occasionally be rather manipulative (which she likely learned from watching her father [and most Tarkaans, actually] at work).
However, Aravis is still not a typical spoiled girl. While still retaining the dignity of a noble, she's rather tomboyish, having grown up with two brothers, and is also fairly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and wielding a scimitar. She has no interest in jewels or dresses, lavish parties, or living the life of a princess. She earned the contempt of quite a few of the other nobles for this.
Despite her somewhat stuck up demeanor, she has a virtuous heart and strong will. Her upbringing didn't sully her fierce loyalty and bravery. Her character continually improves as she spends time outside of Aglis and learns more about the world and interacting with other (cough cough commoners cough). She is extremely loath to use her telepathy, even when consented, because she always feels like she's trespassing forbidden ground. She still studies it at Estrasia but never uses it outside of class. She's very noble, and not in the sense that her blue blood signifies.
All in all, Aravis is a girl with good character who is very much capable of being kind and understanding.
Canon Background:
Sup.AU Background: Aravis Tarkheena was the only daughter born to Kidrash Tarkaan, son of Rishti Tarkaan, son of Kidrash Tarkaan, son of Ilsombreh Tisroc, son of Ardeeb Tisroc, claimed to be descended directly from the god Tash himself. She was born in Aglis, Centra and lived there until she was 12. Her title, "Tarkheena" (the female equivalent of "Tarkaan", while "Tisroc" is of the highest standing), denotes that she is actually of noble status within her rather large clan. Some of said clan - including Aravis - is descended from nobles in Cross that immigrated to Centra a couple of centuries ago. They named their clan "Calormen" and began to refer to themselves as the Calormenes. Over time, they developed traditions and a culture of their own. The Calormene nobles keep mostly to themselves even within the bubble, so Aravis grew up very privileged and naïve of the oustide world.
Her telepathy was first discovered when she was very young, just learning to speak. She would imitate whatever her nursemaid said. However, what she heard from her nursemaid wasn't spoken, but only thought. When her father was informed of her frightening ability, in his greed, he began to use her to take advantage of or swindle the other nobles to gain more power over them. Since Aravis' gift was being abused and overused, it took her time to control it. She'd occasionally have sudden feelings of foreboding, which actually came in handy for her father, who'd use it as a bargaining tool.
Her talent was kept under wraps as to preserve the "authenticity" of her father's wiles. His influence caught the attention of the man under only the Tisroc and his son himself, Ahoshta Tarkaan. Ahoshta was a very old, very cruel and just generally very unpleasant man. Aravis despised him, so of course, she was horrified to discover that her father had arranged their betrothal when she was a mere 12 year old. The clan honored and celebrated their engagement, to her stepmother's great dismay. After all, this little brat was stealing away her limelight! She caught Aravis vehemently protesting the engagement one night and took her outside the palace to beat her. Before the switch could touch her, though, Aravis, in her distressed state, discovered her next ability: she generated an invisible shield to protect her from (most of) her stepmother's lashing.
Aravis was tired of this. She was disgusted with her fate, with her father, with herself for having these gifts she loathed so much. After her stepmother's failed beating, she stole her late brother's dagger, intending to kill herself to end her pain and her father's deceitful ruses. However, just before she plunged that dagger into her heart, she noticed on her desk an envelope addressed to her. It was an invitation to attend Estrasia Academy, and at that moment, Aravis decided to take her life into her own hands.
She fled from her clan, her engagement to Ahoshta, her land - her old life, determined to start over and turn these curses into gifts that would actually benefit other people. She stopped using her telepathy almost completely and chose to attend Estrasia with her newfound gift as her priority.
Appearance: The book didn't explain much about her appearance, but she's a Calormene which basically tells us she's dark-skinned. The illustrations in the book showed her having long, dark hair. She's a bit on the petite side with an athletic build. Let's say 5'3" which is still taller than me, sob. While she doesn't dress femininely, her clothing is usually comfortable, appropriate for fighting, but never bedraggled or bland. She tries not to appear disheveled. The thing one might notice the most about Aravis, though, is the way she carries herself. With her dignified, somewhat dainty gait and perpetually raised chin, it would be hard to mistake her for anything aside from a young woman who believes herself ALL THAT. She doesn't do this on purpose, or for attention; it's how she was raised, and just how she rolls.

Mindreading: While Aravis doesn't use her telepathy, she's got a pretty strong mental defense. You may have to be borderline hax, but talk to me, we can work it out.
