My Fannish Origin Story

Jun 19, 2013 11:20

Let's just pretend I've been posting regularly, shall we?

So some folk were talking about fannish origins on Twitter and it got me thinking, I don't know if I've ever really shared my origin story in any real deapth and it might actually be a fun thing to do. So, here it is.

It all began with the X-Files )

I've had a few moments when I've retweeted awesome stuff Darren has said recently and people have looked at me blankly, so I figured I'd better clarify who it was I was writing all that porn about.

We can both be young for trees!

There is so much I can identify with here. X-Files was my first fandom too and I stumbled across fandom and fanfic much the same way as you. Internet had just arrived at the local library (you had to book a slot, 1h/person/day) and on following X-Files links I ended up at Gossamer before soon. I totally still remember the excitement of finding out the stories of stuff I wanted to see in the TV. Like you, I was a Mulder/Scully shipper through and through (OTP of my teenage heart, responsible for my enduring love of the 'from bffs to something more' trope ( ... )

OMG my local library had 1 hour bookings too! But I mostly used the internet in the computer labs at uni until I had home access. I remember being all shifty looking over my shoulder because they were all crammed into a room together and you had a person either side. I pretty much only used them for message boards, I couldn't really read fic there because OMG what if someone SAW.

*Mulder/Scully shipper high five* I'm sure they are responsible for my "friends-into-lovers" obsession!

YOU READ SAVAGE GARDEN? What did you read? Were you on any mailing lists or just on the websites? *nostalgia attack*

Oooh thanks for the links, I'll have to check those out. I'm on a bit of a nostalgia kick right now, though I'm still not sure if I have the stones to post my old fandom fics to AO3 as yet.

I was about 15 when both X-Files and internet arrived into my life :D But once I got to university I certainly used the computers there for purposes beyond academic study...

Lol yes, I read Savage Garden. I wasn't on any mailing lists, mostly I kept checking some of the central (now sadly disappeared) fanfic sites. And of course those were the days when ff.net allowed RPF. And I totally still occasionally listen to my Savage Garden CDs and Darren's solo stuff.

I've posted aaaaaaaaaall old fanfic except for that one schmaltzy Mulder/Scully Christmas story (seriously so sugary *g*) but everything I've posted on LJ (which, btw, was started 2005 not 2007 - EVEN OLDER THAN I THOUGHT) is on AO3.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOURS! I loved reading it. I'm fascinated that you spent a time writing partnered original fic - that's not something you hear that often.

I also think it's pretty telling that even before you knew what fanfic was you were sort of writing it. I'm sure that people have written dissertations on how fanfic is so popular because it just kind of HAPPENS, like we are predisposed to it or something like that.

Ahahahahaha. THAT FUCKING HARRY STYLES Y'ALL. LIFE RUINER.

Fangirls are absolutely and doubtlessly the best thing about fandom. Full stop.

*hugs*

Aww, it's neat to hear your origin story! And omg, web rings, omg, I remember those. WHOA. Also, hee, I think you must've been in Savage Garden RPS while I was in U2 RPS. Gosh, am I ever happy to pretty much mostly NOT have to still fight the "RPS is valid" fight these days. That got old so fast. Heh.

OMG WEBRINGS. It's probably Delicious' fault I'm even getting nostalgic since THEY are the ones who brought up webrings.

You were in U2 RPS? FASCINATING. I'm so glad the RPS argument is either dead or not happening in parts of the internet where I can see it. God it was ugly.

I remember all the, like ~politicking to get into the really ~exclusive Star Wars webrings and just wowww. I think you're spot on re: delicious though there, too. Heee.

Yup! For ages upon ages. And god, right?? I think we spent most of the early 2000s having that fight all the time. And it confused me so much because I'd never even for a second been bothered by it myself so it was definitely a shock to the system to see other viewpoints, hee.

I still remember when you came onto LJ and mentioned wanting a new fandom and I think the next day you had found MCR. \o/

That e-mail to you is one of the best things I've ever done! :D It got you back in my life! Yay!!!
