Aren't paid accounts supposed to be exempt from ads? I don't see them on my journal when logged in, but from what I understood (and the way it used to be), they're not supposed to show up for visitors either.
I have Google Chrome's ad-blocker installed, so I don't know if adverts will be showing up on mine. I also have a paid account, so for one or the other of those reasons, I don't see adverts. I loathe advertising. Is there a more pointless and annoying waste of human effort?
*nods* I use Ad Blocker Plus on Chrome, too. I only saw the ads on mine because I was logged out on a different browser.
I don't like ads, but I do see the necessity of them in certain circumstances. I run small, independent websites - it can be difficult to finance those without some sort of advertising.
Even so, I keep them small and unobtrusive. They're near the bottom of the page and are separate from content. There's a big difference between that and some big ass banner at the top of the page, you know? The latter is intrusive and ruins the whole layout.
Yeah, I was over-generalising there, wasn't I? As someone who's played in various bands over the years and always enjoyed the business of publicising them, it's true to say that I wouldn't have had much success in attracting people to their gigs without plenty of posters, flyers and internet ads. So yeah, it's necessary to an extent, and of course adverts can be clever and amusing. This was a classic billboard campaign here from a few years ago:
I totally agree about the corporate advertising. Unfortunately, those of us who have to advertise on our websites don't get to choose which ads that are shown. I just try to keep mine as unobtrusive as possible - I also don't bother with any of that "please disable your ad blocker" crap.
That's what bothers me most about internet advertising. People should be able to block ads without being hassled about it… it's no different than me fast forwarding through commercials.
Here's one of my sites. Ads are toward the bottom of the page, separate from the other content.
My lj is has been and more than like always will be friends only. So I don't see them and not sure if the few who do read mine see them or not. But hey still better than All the ads on fb
I checked the guidelines, and it seems that for paid accounts, you don't see ads anywhere on the site when you're logged in. Other logged in users don't see them on your journal either, though they do show up for guests.
If you're on a free account, both logged in users (on the free plan) and guests will see ads on your journal unless you upgrade to a paid account.
Unless of course you have an ad-blocker :D I don't think anyone operates without one anymore... let's hope lj doesn't ban them in future :D
Ads just suck, they do not make me want to buy anything, quite on the contrary I end up avoiding that item. What I do find creepy is having an ad tailored to me, as in googleing something and a day later having the search result pop up in an ad..

Also, yes, ad tailoring is creepy as hell! It makes me feel like I'm being stalked. D:
