The Real Goal (Post-NaNoWriMo Thoughts)

Dec 02, 2019 12:05

I can do a shit load of writing in November. At this point, that goes without saying. For the past few years though, that's the only time I've been able to write consistently.

THE CYCLE
November: 30 days of nonstop writing
December: Take month off to recover
January: New Year's Resolution to write daily
Early/Mid-January: Resolution fails
Late ( Read more... )

goals, new year's resolutions, nanowrimo, writing

I think that's a great plan! I, personally, am going to need a break though. My mental health has been suffering and I'm never in a good place at the end of November.

That said, I did write for a bit today. 500ish words and I'm happy with that.

I wish I could take a break and get right back to it. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way for me. I either have to be consistent, or it turns into this cycle of guilt/anxiety/depression that makes me not want to do it at all.

That said, we both need to scale back now that the madness is over. November takes a lot out of us, doesn't it?

Man kudos to you for keeping buttoned down on that, I was missing my Heather fixes so I decided to stroll onnover here to the old stomping grounds. It does make me want to get back on some LJing, but more than anything was glad to catch up on what you have been up to, I always sort of forget about the Nanomowrite thing and the singular focus you get with that. I envy it really, I get pretty bogged down and find quietness when I can, being able to just knuckledown on a passion is amazing. You can expect to see me around these parts more often...

I love that everything about your journal is the same as that was in like, 2003. It really DOES make me feel nostalgic. XD

Speaking of blogging, there's something else I'm working on at the moment. Don't want to give away too much, but it might end up being a cool new hangout. ;)

Having a visual list has always helped me I like the idea and I totally get why you want to change your routines when it comes to writing since you have done so well in nano :)

Fingers crossed, you have my support!

I'd say that when you do so much in November that you'd start to get burned out and end up not wanting to write after all of that. Or at least that is how I'd feel.

So the options are either find a way that you can take a break and then get back to writing after.
or
Find a sensible pace for writing that doesn't lead to burnout and stick to it, and then in the future ignore NaNoWriMo, because you are writing all year round and the mad burst of writing is counterproductive on the long term.

Funny thing is, I'm really NOT burned out at the end of November. I'm totally into whatever I'm working on, and I have the energy to keep writing. The reason I usually don't is because I'm missing other things. I mean, the rest of my life basically gets put on hold throughout November.

It's not needing a break. It's needing balance. That's what I'm working on this time around - scaling back and making room for the other stuff rather than choosing one over the other.

Will it work? Let's hope so!
