I don't think it's all these epic movies suddenly. I mean, all of these stories were orignally books. And these books were written at different times. I think the concept of good and evil is always present. Maybe it's written by authors who are pretty much "fuck, what the hell can I do?" people. So they create a world where things are both easier and harder. Easier because you don't have to define good and evil, it's defined for you. But harder because you're forced to be a hero, whether or not you are. Case in point, Frodo, who never wanted to carry the ring
