Just- the brutality of day to day existence; it's almost like having to reinvent machinery, farming, and civilization.

It really is a rough time for humanity. "Fulfill basic human needs (warmth, water, food, [plus that thing they forgot about]), with only the non-working scraps of modern existence to work from. Oh, and every time you try to go outside it's going to be a life-or-death battle. Have fun with that."

I've been getting advice from friend Dave, who is kind of a self-sufficiency dude and super-experienced in all kinds of construction/improvisation/backpack camping stuff. (You should see his back yard. He turned his swimming pool into a stocked fish pond, balanced the ecosystem to the point where he doesn't have to feed them, and cycles that water through the vertical container-garden. Between his yard and hunting trips, he says he only goes to the grocery store for like 15% of their food). Google is surprisingly unhelpful in apocalyptic scenarios.

So many apocalyptic stories are about people just fighting and scrounging for their next meal without showing the process of trying to live beyond today. This is actually the part of this genre of story that I enjoy - the intelligent planning. And a little sex and love where you can find it.

Another great chapter. I really missed this.
