My knee got better the more I walked, and I walked a lot. Among other things I also climbed the 533 stairs to the top of the cathedral - jelly legs! But worth it.
The city itself is not very pretty since it got completely bombed in the war, but the museums and the art were wonderful! (Chagall, Franz Marc, Macke, Monet, Manet, everything from Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, ohhh, I was in heaven :-D)
The Dom (the cathedral) was never bombed. After the war the city asked the british pilots why they'd avoided the Dom at all costs - their answer: they were not allowed to bomb the church because they needed it as an outstanding landmark, otherwise they might have missed the city and dropped the bombs into the river or so...

Sounds like a facinating place. The history in itself, and the place looks beautiful.
Glad you were able to go.
