While this little clip refers to a law in the United States, the basic situation is similar in Europe. Too many chemicals that have either never been tested or where the lobby has bent the results to their liking. Have a look at the clip, have a look on the ingredience list of your cleaners / your food/ the chemicals used to produce clothes....

For example the safest things you can buy for a kid is second ahnd stuff. Won't break off in little pieces to choke them and have had all the nasty chemicals washed off.

for the most parts that's true (expecially concerning clothes). However, there are some kinds of plastic that, with age, start leaching toxic stuff. And if you lick the toys or touch them with your hands and then lick your hands, you're eating the stuff. The really soft plastics are worst.
Isn't it horrible? At least BPA is finally banned from baby bottles as far as I know.
