25 facts about myself

Feb 05, 2009 16:59

Kevin tagged me, so it's my turn to fill out that meme! However, I'm not tagging anyone else, so answer back only if you feel like it and haven't already.

1. I learned to read at age 5 by myself (credit probably goes to Sesame Street and The Electric Company).

2. When growing up, I thought that Sesame Street was set in Montreal (heh, no neighborhood here looks like Brooklyn Heights, but I guess that the inner city aspect felt close enough to the inner city I grew up in).

3. I discovered anime at a very young age (around age 4, I'd say), and developed a fascination with the Japanese language then, thanks to two Tatsunoko series, Hutchi and Demetan, which aired in French in Quebec with the Japanese theme song intact.

4. I used to have my own byline in an American magazine called Adam, back in early 2002 (I wrote the videogame column).

5. I have a fierce phobia of wasps.

6. The first show I saw was Eric Clapton, when I was a baby.

7. The first show I remember seeing was Roger Waters in 1988 with my parents. I was 13.

8. I still use my Smurfs comforter for sleeping. I've had it since 1982. The rest of the blanket set is still at my parents' house, AFAIK.

9. I did not get a console until I was 11 years old. My parents feared that I'd become antisocial if I did, so they preferred that I use my friends' consoles for social gaming.

10. Because of moving, I attended 4 different elementary schools from kindergarten to grade 6 (including 2 years in private school), but I went to only one junior high/high school (sister schools on the same campus that have merged since).

11. In elementary school, I used two lunchboxes: the older one was a blue Peanuts box with an image of Snoopy and Woodstock in scout gear, the newer one was an orange Transformers box with an image depicting the Autobots and Decepticons in a space fight.

12. Translation was actually my third choice of program in university. First choice was Film making (got turned down), second was double major in communication and journalism (got accepted in communication, turned down in journalism because I forgot to write the entry exam) and third was translation.

13. I'm one of the least manual people ever. Even putting together a simple piece of furniture can turn into a catastrophe if I'm not careful.

14. My favorite cuisine is Thai/Vietnamese food, which I discovered when I was little (my mom worked near two great restaurants that she used to go to regularly).

15. I was grunge more than a decade before grunge became a trend: there's a classic picture of me, age 3 at Christmas wearing a dressy dress, black tights, wool socks, knockoff black Chuck Taylors and a blue plaid shirt. That was in 1978.

16. I used to do morning news on my college radio and I remember when I announced Kurt Cobain's death one morning. Not that it made a difference, since no one at school ever listened to that station!

17. I used to have a big dog, a huge bouvier des Flandres called Zappa. He scared people who never met him before, but in reality, he was a big baby that never grew up.

18. I've known my best friend for 20 years. Jools and I met in 1988 when we were in grade 7/secondary 1.

19. My parents and I spent the whole summer of 1984 (when I was 8) traveling across Canada and the upper United States. We had a van then and stayed on campgrounds across the continent.

20. I have a very faint scar on my right eyebrow: when I was little, I once cut up my eyebrow by tripping in an escalator.

21. When I was little, I also once dislocated my shoulder in a Montreal city bus. It's a wonder I didn't develop a phobia of buses and escalators!

22. I've also broken my right arm in grade 2 and sprained my right ankle several times as a teen and young adult.

23. When I was very young, I wanted to be an electronician (nevermind my lack of manual abilities!). I even got a Radio Shack Electronics Kit as a kid.

24. I'm an only child, but I come from a large family. My mom has 6 brothers and sisters, and I have 5 cousins on that side only. However, there's an age gap between me and the others: the youngest of my uncle is 9 years older than me, and the oldest of my cousin, 7 years younger than me.

25. I'm left-handed but I mouse right, bat right and use scissors with either hand. I used to be able to switch to right-handed play at pool, but I lost that ability from lack of practice.
