ARGH!!!!!!!!!

THis absolutely fucking sucks. For all the reasons you mention above and then some. What really pisses me off the most is now my associating a good thing like the story of The Hobbit with all this crap. Totally destroys any magic, knowing that they'd prefer a quick and easy solution to doing the thing RIGHT (and doing the right thing).
