Kyra, it sounds like you have the same problem I do. It's not an ear infection at all. Your ears simply produce an over abundance of ear wax (completely something you cannot control).

If it is getting to the point where it affects your hearing (does the same to me), I recommend you do NOT use Q-tips. It only makes it worse for you (it just compacts the wax into your canal). Also, if you must use a Q-tip, it should never be put inside your ear canal and should only be used to clean the very edge of it and other areas external to the ear.

You can buy a little ear cleaning tool at Walmart (it looks like a funny handle with a thin stalk and has a loop at the end of it) that can be used to help clean wax out of your ear.

Again, Dr. Wyrosdic told me to give up using Q-tips, as it only makes the problem I have with ear-wax worse. I got one of those little cleaner tools and haven't had to go get my ears cleaned out for over a year now.

The tool itself is a curette. You should definately be able to buy one at Walmart, although I'm not sure if it would be called anything different.

Here's what my curette looks like:

What sucks even worse for me is having to go get my ears flushed at the doctors office. I am the only person they have ever encountered that actually experiences pain during the process (most people say it feels pleasent for the most part).

It's definately not a fun experience. It causes shooting pains to go down my neck and the last time I had it done, I left with a splitting headache. I swear to god using a curette will save you so much greif over your ears. Just be careful with it though, as it is easy to hurt yourself with them.
