IT'S SNOWING!!!!
In other news, I love Modest Mouse.
Their music… It surrounds you, makes you feel completely awash in your emotions. The rhythms, the riffs, the incredible lyrics… They’re like no other band I’ve ever heard. A song can take hold of you, make you want to dancesingscreamrunfantasizeflyswimcry all at once. The references to God and religion, the confusing jumble of thoughts and ideas, the lines of lyrics of startling clarity that hit you like bullet in the gut, the truth behind the words. And the humour that’s always behind the sincerity, almost mocking. It’s just life, baby. How, in their various albums, there’s always a recurring riff, a recurring idea, recurring lyrics that tie the entire sprawling record together. The static drum beats, the guitars like screeching cats or beautiful melodious voices. There’s just so much depth that you can come back again and again to the same few albums and become obsessed with an entirely new aspect of the music. One week it’s “Dramamine” and the next it’s “Truckers Atlas.” Then it’s songs eleven through fourteen on “Moon and Antarctica.” It’s the one band I come back to, over and over again, just to be pulled in with the same fascination and awed discovery as the first time I really listened to them. They never get old, they never get worn out. You just move on to a different song, a different album, or listen to the same one a thousand times. I love the subtlety, the absolute subtlety and little distinguishing characteristics, treats like Easter eggs they leave along the way. Just when you think you know every bit of their music, you realize you overlooked an entire aspect that draws you in even further when you explore it. Isaac Brock’s varying voice inflections that poke fun at himself and you in extension, just like the minute changes in expression that Alan Rickman uses to portray the deepest emotion, or the differing pen strokes Edward Gorey applies to make the kohl around the flapper’s eyes look just so. I never dreamed that this band would end up meaning so much to me. But it does. And I love it.
