Polar Politics and a Declaration of Determination

Sep 16, 2008 14:11

I was going to cut-tag this as I do all my political posts, but I feel so strongly about it that I'm leaving this one post without a cut tag. I imagine this may get me removed from a few people's friends' lists, but so be it. I hope not, but nevertheless, I feel this needs to be said "out loud", as it were. I hope that if it's not of interest to ( Read more... )

While I intend to vote with you and so am not commenting on anything else, it is possible that your sign was simply vandalized by a jackass who thought it would be fun to rip up a yard sign, rather than a frightening jackass who was targeting Obama supporters. I rather hope that is the case, but well. I'm not not optimistic.

BTW go you for putting it back up.

I hear you, and I considered that -- but generally a jackass takes things down and tosses them in a tree or some equally juvenile action. I have seen a lot of stupid teen vandalism and generally it's driven by swift action and not so much the heavy destruction. ( at least in so far as small items like this sign) This smacks of maliciousness to me, but I hear what you're saying.

I hate to say it, it's the reason I won't put stickers on my car or in my windows or on my lawn.

I will put them up, yes. Just not on my own property. Because I hate to say I am less than optimistic that my property will remain unharmed by someone with a dissenting opinion. Just because I do not key cars that state the opposite beliefs from myself and just because I do not do things to others' lawns does not mean I think they won't do it to mine.

It's sad, but while I will gladly proclaim my reasons and opinions on groups far and wide over the internet, I do not trust my neighbors enough to not do something. One of my neighbors dislikes me enough already because my home doesn't look like something out of Better Homes and Gardens and hers does. Don't need to add to it. She spent the last election with a W sticker on her car (and parked it in a garage every day so it couldn't be touched).

Kudos to you for putting your sign up... I'm just not willing to risk what some of my neighbors might do.

The fact that you feel unable to express your support on your own property is the exact reason I find this so appalling. If not in the United States of America, WHERE can you freely say what you feel and believe?

I totally understand how you feel, but it makes me ineffably sad to hear it. And it's my hope that we can change that somehow, at least in so far as our government is concerned, that gives me the drive to help the campaign I believe in.

I'll be honest, I haven't really found myself able to get behind Obama, or Hillary, or any of the democratic (former) candidates. On the other hand, I have wholeheartedly despised the republican ones.

But because of my neighbor, I did not put a "No W" sign on my car or anywhere else during the last campaign.

You're right that it is a shame that I feel I cannot put whatever I would like on my own property, but I feel that I could make a greater statement online anyways...

I am sorry someone chose to be a dick and vandalize your property. I am glad you are putting your sign back up.

But after having spent so much to get the outside of my house fixed up, I have no desire to watch someone do something to it. I may not look like better homes and gardens, but I really don't need to have someone vandalize anything on my lawn, or my home itself.

At the most basic level, someone destroyed your property. If not the sign, the mailbox, your yard, a window... Isn't this a reportable offense? Not that the police could do anything about it now, but can't you go on record and report a neighborhood vandal?!

We can -- but to what effect? In this case, the sign, while symbolic, was not functional property in the way that a window or mailbox would be. They got to make their point, and now I will make mine, by making sure they did not prevent our expression of support from being made. But I hear you. :)

Someone in my neighborhood decided that it was perfectly okay for them to be cruel, because what they believe is somehow more important and better than what WE believe.

and that sentiment is the message I have been receiving from pretty much all the Republican types and administration flunkies "OUR way is the ONLY way"

sometimes directly (like when they speak) sometimes indirectly (like when they act) ... and it saddens me followers of that ignorant arrogance actually seem to be growing in number

but, as others had tried to optimistically point out, maybe it was just a generic idiot rather than a political idiot ... not sure if that would make their actions any easier to digest though

(((hug)))

Even if this particular action was specifically politically motivated (although I find it difficult to believe that, it would maybe make me feel slightly better?), it's still indicative to me of a prevailing wind in the country that disturbs me to my core. But all I can do is my best to be positive myself, so I will do what I can to do that.

Thanks, darlin'.
