Thyroid cancer update!

Feb 21, 2012 21:11

Hey there LJ, sorry I've been so slow getting around to updating you all on the thyroid situation.

On Friday morning I had surgery to remove my whole thyroid, and it went really well.  The surgeon said it looked like the tumor was very well-contained, and I didn't have any complications.  I spent a pretty miserable night in the hospital but I went home on Saturday as planned, and then my mom got into town and has been cooking and stuff and generally doing stuff that I'm not up for (either now temporarily, or ever because I'm just sort of lazy).

Still waiting to hear the results of the lymph biopsy, which will determine whether or not I need to have radio iodine therapy, though we're anticipating negative on any metastisis.  My surgeon will call me as soon as the pathology results are in, and then I'll schedule an appointment to go see her and get the butterflies off my neck and she'll check out my wound and be sure it's healing all right.

Pathology results show cancerous cells in 4 of the 12 lymph nodes my surgeon removed.  I'll be making an appointment with my endocrinologist to see where to go from here.  I'm seeing my surgeon next Wednesday to check the incision and take the butterflies off.

I've pretty much got all my energy back, except I'm still taking codeine/acetaminophen pretty regularly to stay comfortable (the site is a bit swollen and tender, especially where the drain was, and my throat is a little bit sore) so I've got a mini narcotics haze happening and it's not safe for me to drive until I stop the medication.  Also the site itches sometimes and I have to try to not scratch at it.  Other than that I'm doing great though.

You'll also notice I have some new Sherlock user pics ... yeah ;)
