newbie's discoveries or 10 tennets of vidding

Feb 06, 2008 20:10

I've been vidding for about 6 months, but it turns out I'm completely new to conscious vidding. I've just discovered there's an entire universe of things I don't know and a constelation of things I've only managed to do half-right by pure pot luck. So, after going through half of community memories of Read more... )

It's all true. However, there's one big, big, BIG rule that you've overlooked: VIDDING IS FUN. The angsting is FUN. Solving the tech problems that plague us is FUN. Learning the rules and then breaking them? ALSO FUN.

THOU SHALT ENJOY THYSELF. :)

And that shall be The New Commandment. The absolutely obvious, basic, underlying rule of all vidding; that of course needed to be pointed out by the Messiah, aka Luminosity.

lo and behold, I'm hearing voices already! so much fun :D

Dude. I love this post. Nay. I ADORE this post with a fiery passion.

And having gotten back some quick beta notes from Lithium Doll on a vid that includes notations such as "wow, that's really literal," I'm right there with you on the insecurity front. :P

But the icon says it all.

Practically every vidder I know is insecure. It's not just a newbie thing!

There's a club? - ooh I am so joining that. Loved the post, it made my laugh and nod sagely too.

Enjoy vidding.

Hello! Wow, there sure seem to be many different levels to newbie-ness (meaning you're a far more experienced newbie than me :)

I've been vidding for over 6 years now, and I am still a newbie. :p

Great list! Especially amen to #4 *g* I'd also be tempted to add another - that vidding the same song in the same fandom is a Bad Thing. I always search Google, YouTube, and whichever is the fandom's main vid archive (like the Buffy Music Video Database or Kawoosh) before I do a vid, just to make sure I'm not reinventing the wheel.

That would be one of the things that fall under #4 (according to most theological schools) - and one of the things that terrified me the most, since I was just about to make a vid to very overused song in a particular fandom in which it is criminally overused, and stopped dead in my tracks. But I'm still tempted to break this particular rule...

Ah, you're so right. That it would.

Like Lum said, breaking the rules is fun. I've been tempted to do it myself, when the other vids to the same song are, in my opinion, total rubbish. *g*

It's getting harder and harder to find songs that haven't been vidded, and several are, as you put it, criminally overused, but... as tempting as it is, I implore you to broaden your music collection rather than giving in to that particular temptation. Song choice is still my biggest issue with most vids, and using overvidded songs is the quickest way for a vidder to lose my attention. The world really doesn't need another Chasing Cars vid. Really, it doesn't. I don't care if the one in your fandom was the worst piece of crap ever -- please, *please* find another song.

Ha! Nice post. Welcome to the crazy (and damn fun) world of vidding. I am fairly new myself (been doing it just a year) but still consider myself a newbie ( ... )

Thanks for the welcome and reassurance. And don't worry, I was the geek non-conformist at school too and wouldn't ever vid to fit anyone else's expectations than my own (they're insanly high already)or to get noticed. I can use nifty livejournal posts to that end ;)
