Rory hits his head on the way down and wakes up among the gravestones in the dark. He spends the night in the cemetery, sitting in the empty plot that will be his in fifty years. Ever since he was a child, he’s been told If you get lost, stay there so we can find you, so he shivers in the wet grass and hopes against hope. But when the sun rises, he is still alone, and after he has checked every stone in every plot and found not a single date past September 1938, he is still alone, and when his shadow grows so short he can barely see it, he knows they won’t be coming for him. He sinks down on a bench and rests his head in his hands
