Purple is the colour of the franchise, apparently. It certainly goes back a long way, but I don't know exactly how far. Unfortunately it's also one of UKIP's colours, but as I refuse to wear purple with yellow I don't think anyone's going to confuse me with a UKIP supporter.

I think the colours of the Suffragettes were purple, green and white, maybe that's related?
