Dutch to create cradle-to-grave database

I can see incredible value. I can also see incredible abuse. It it wrong for me to be relieved that some other country is doing this first, and we can watch and see how it works for them?

Your thoughts, anyone?

What Iceland had was basically the birth and death records, ye standard census data on everyone from the day they settled the island. That came in handy for the DNA stuff, because they had all of the geneological data for their population, and a population that had been, well, insular.

Huh. Maybe there really is a "Permanent Record."

My question is, clearly *someone* has to have access to the entireity of the files. Otherwise how could their Child Protection agency know that the police, the shcool and the doctor have raised red flags?

It's a concept. I'm not sure how feasable it is.

I have considered questions like this before. I think that we can't let fear of corruption and abuse stop forward progress if we as a race want to continue to grow. This could be useful in to many non abusive ways to justify nay-saying it because of abuse potential. WIth that said a tool like this would have to be watchdogged prefferably by several different unrelated groups at least of of them open to public review. Checks and ballances. *grins* I still love the idea even if it has let me down in the last couple decades.

BTW if you are wondering I drifted over from Touch of Greys post. You seemed interesting.

I still retain my basic belief in the goodness of man, but my faith in "The System" (whichever system it may be) has been rather strained over the years. *grins back* Yes, checks and balances is a lovely idea and eventually we will, as a species, get it all right. It is just hard to know now when extending the trust and risking the potential abuse is worth the risk. I guess we'll see how the Dutch system works over time.

Ahhh.... that's where you drifted over from. When I glanced at your icon over in touchofgrey's journal I thought "yeah - he's SCA". Haha! I was bound to be right about something, eventually, today! Greetings from snowy Northshield. :-)
