Okay, okay I'm really not trying to kill you with posts. I swear.
I promised myself when this was finished I'd post my work in progress on my LJ so here it is;
My Millenium Puzzle
This has taken me up to a week to finish and has involved many failed attempts and more glue than horses dare to think about.
Initially I planned to make it out of plywood using this amazing
tutorial.
However, upon venturing to Wickes I discovered plywood's incredibly hard to get in small sheets and sheets of the right thickness. So whilst my Mum stood their agitated she just sighed 'Why don't you just use MDF?'
Kiss. Off. Death
Incapable hands, MDF probably works fine. For me on the other hand it didn't. Whilst I spent about two hours trying to cut the damn triangles out with a poor excuse for a handsaw I simultaneously managed to seriously cripple both hands, inc. all fingers. Finally, I thought, I'd cut all the pieces out thinking 'Phew, this might work!'
Did it buggery.
For starters my brain stopped working when I started constructing the shape, as for some reason I was admant I only needed three triangles...
After that mishap I must have battled for at least another hour and half wondering why the fucking piecies just wouldn't stick.
Then my Dad shows up;
'They wont stick if they're not exactly the same size you know.'
Whilst I'd used a template to sketch out all the pieces, ensuring they were all the same, my hack-n-slash method of cutting the pieces out had meant all that had gone to shit.
Refusing to give up I sat for another hour and half (by this time I'd almost watched all of Spoonys entire video back catalog) and tried to sandpaper them down to the right size. All this resulted in was dust everywhere, less skin on my fingers and four ill fitting triangles.
Again my Mum arrives;
'If I were you I'd have just paper mache-d it, I told you it was a waste of time.'
At the start I was admant paper mache wouldn't work, but after fighting with MDF I thought, fuck it, might as well.
That's when things went smoothly for a bit.
I made the eye out of fimo which was all relitavely simple;
I then however had to move on to the task of gluing piece of cardboard in to a triangle structure. This was not meant to be. Hell to save you from my angst and torment let me sum itt up in this photograph;
I should have photographed my bastard hands just to prove how much glue it actually took. There was so much, not even scrubbing it in theshower helped. In the end this was blasted with spray adhesive and gaffer tape was used on the inside to bind joints and give it a bit of tension.
I then started the task of paper mache, which worked suprisingly well. It's impossible to get a smooth finish with paper mache, so with this in mind I decided to cut my paper in to long, neat stripes rather than just tearing them.
Though I didn't get a photo, I actually achieved a really good affect with this, with the paper giving the impression, of puzzle segments.
The puzzle was then coated in 'Brass' enamel;
From the start I knew I didn't want to do a mega complex version of the puzzle, as to be honest, I knew I wouldnt be able to pull it off.
So I went for the more simple version Kasuki draws. The pieces were all made of bristol board as I wanted something thin enough to easily cut out, but thick enough to hold its weight under a onslaught of glue.
In the ended I ended up not using the corner pieces shown here. They didn't work as separate pieces so I created some new corner pieces.
And now, the final product;
It could have been a little tider and theres few bits and bobs I'm not too keen on, but overall I think for a first attempt it went pretty well!
Now on to the wig...
