When last we left our heroes,
they were trudging up a rocky slope toward the Sunset Overlook. Man, those rocks were a pain to climb, especially for Sarah and me, as we have bad knees.
Before we made the attempt, however, we stopped for a breather on the fenced ledge where, a century and more ago, hunters used to wait to pick off red-tailed hawks as they migrated through the mountain valley. They thought they were being conservationists, ironically. While on the ledge, we had decent cell phone reception, so Leigh and Jonathan phoned home and we all took a turn chatting with their sister. Claire and Sarah solemnly swore they were up to no good.
Also at this ledge are the remains of a stone building. According to my grandfather, they were building some sort of lookout post, but the project was abandoned for reasons unknown. It sure made for some grand speculation, however.
Right, so off we went to Sunset Overlook. What a climb! This had so better be worth it.
Hrm. They got lucky.
We lingered on the rocks at Sunset for some time, feeling very peaceful and...just kind of together. It was a really nice thing, being there at that moment with the kids.
Finally, we made our way up the treacherous path to the North Lookout, which turned out to really be worth the struggle.
At this point I stole the camera from Leigh and took a bunch of pictures.
After a good long rest, we decided to head back down so we could be sure to get off the mountain by nightfall. First, though, we had to re-enact the unity scene from LXG. Because we are not just geeky, we are fabulously geeky.
We conquered the mountain! Yay us!
Anyway. That was Friday. Saturday was not a happy day for me, but these guys made it a lot more bearable than it might have been. I have no photographs of us all curled up together to watch Narnia.
Sunday, Leigh and Jonathan had to head back to Tennessee, so first we did some picspam in the yard. Leigh has long wanted to "glomp" (tacklehug) Claire, and she finally did it...this is what it looks like.
They also posed together, the "Sawyer sisters."
Then we did a few group shots which became progressively sillier...
And finally, the hair shot. I mean, group hug.
The blondes left us then, and we passed the rest of Sunday in relative quiet. On Monday we took Claire and Sarah to Philadelphia, where we rode a bus and saw historical stuff before putting them on a plane back to England. I cried.
And that was our British Invasion. It was not long enough, but it couldn't possibly BE long enough. One last question, however...Maddy wants to know when all her friends will be back.
