Yeah, the mood of P3 is VERY different from P4. When I was playing it, I described it to people as being one part RPG, one part Social Sim, and one part emo. I'm not going to lie, there are going to be deaths. And not the kind that can be fixed with revival beads.
Also regarding the support chara thing, Mitsuru does eventually get replaced and becomes a fighter like Teddie did. Though in the English version, I MUCH preferred Mitsuru because Fuuka's actress did a really bad job. Her pronunciations and emphasis and inflections were terrible. (Aside from that the English actors were pretty good)
No, you can't directly control the other party members, though as you go on you get more options for strategies to give them. Also, the male party members don't have social links. Everyone's personas will eventually evolve like at the end of their s.links in P4, but it happens at certain plot points instead.
