I've been constantly saddened by low voter turnout and the direction that politics have been heading.

It's terrible everywhere. That only around half of registered voters vote in a presidential election is ridiculous, and that's only registered voters! Millions don't even register.

My town recently did a mail ballot on one stand alone issue and over 30% returned it! They need to just go to mail ballots for everything.
