i started smoking at 19 and continued till i was 36.

working on many healthcare projects, a product on smoking cessation was one i've done recently and the data that shows how dramatically your health improves with stopping is astounding. more and more new research goes to support that.

tried many times to quit ... so many till a good friend would roll his eyes backward and whisper to other frens in the vicinity "let's see how long this attempt lasts"

finally managed to quit with Allen Carrs' book The Easyway To Quit and i've been free since Sept 2007. quite a few friends have read the same book and we've all been cigarette free

there are also quitting clinics.

Congrats on quitting! The longest the friend I'm writing about has quit was 6 months I think. It was also exhausting to watch her start again and get into that cycle all over again like watching a friend in a destructive love affair. But I've known other people who have quit including my lj friend insomniatrix who has been off cigs for 17 months now!

i was reading somewhere as I was doing some research that you need to learn how to live without cigarettes.

As this blog puts it: "There is a difference between just trying to abandon smoking and learning how to quit smoking."

See: http://www.easyquitsystem.com/blog/quit-smoking-cold-turkey-success-rates/

Hope thats some food for thought for your friend.

i rather like the end, the casino reference really hits the point home.

but this is my favorite part:
how we constantly seal and unseal our fates

its so true. we really do. every day we make choices that could affect the rest of our lives.

i really should quit.

yes, I think it doesn't really need the casino imagery... have you tried it with just one last line of choices?
