Well, apparently, since I've paid off my debt to Citibank they are not charging me service fees, despite the fact that I opened the account over a decade ago specifically because there would be no fucking fees ( Read more... )

Make sure you can open an account before you close your old one. Many banks now are really testy about checking accounts and will check your credit score and similar before opening one.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm leaning towards Wa-Mu since I really only need the verrrry basic stuff . . . a checking account, and the possibility of setting up a linked savings account.

I have WaMu checking and savings accounts and just love them. So far, they've been very good to me. All they required is that I have $25 a month automatically transferred to savings from checking, but since I can transfer it immediately back to checking with no penalty it's all been good.

Edited to add: I also really, really like their online banking interface.

I use the actors federal credit union and love them. If you're a member of any of the acting unions, you can join. All of the ATM's in NYC mcdonalds are theirs!

I have Bank of America and they're not terrible, but they're not that great either. I've heard good things about Wamu and Commerce Bank.
