I've considered myself a Trekkie since 6th Grade when a cousin brought some Star Trek:Next Generation novels home (to Manila) from the States. She lent them to me, I got hooked, found out that one of the local channels was showing episodes (this was before cable tv was widespread in Manila), found out the biggest chain bookstore in the Philippines sold MORE ST:NG novels (and ST:TOS novels, too) and the rest is history. My friends knew that I was a Trekkie (and had a huge crush on Wesley Crusher. Yes, I was a huge dork) and whenever one of them would go to the States, they would get me a novel they hoped I didn't have yet. By the time I stopped buying the novels (this was in college when I switched to Romance Novels. Yes, I am a Traitor and a Sappy one, too.), I must have had about 40 novels in my collection. I, and my allowance, couldn't keep up with the number of new novels that came out AND I got turned off by ST:DS9, ST:Voyager and Enterprise.
I've watched most, if not all, the ST movies (thank you cable!) but I put off watching Star Trek 2009 because I wasn't really a fan of TOS. I heard a lot of good things about it, of course, but I just put off watching it because this was at the beginning of my NCIS obsession. I DID note that Chris Pine could pass for a young Tony DiNozzo/Michael Weatherly.
Then, 2 months ago I started working at a little Chocolate Kiosk in a certain Mall on the Strip. Said Kiosk just happens to be right outside an art/music/movie/tv/sports/history memorabilia store that also shows random movies on 2 tv screens you can see from the outside. You can't hear anything unless you're in the actual store, but if you're familiar with the movie, you can pretty much follow what they're saying. About a month ago they started showing Star Trek 2009. I couldn't help but be intrigued, even if I couldn't really follow since there was no audio. Two weeks ago, I borrowed the DVD from the local library.
Well, shite. I'm hooked. One week ago, I bought the special edition DVD, Dangit, I'm even more hooked. Then, I stumbled (read: searched) on some fanfic and...well. K/S rules.
Damn you, Star Trek 2009! *waves fist* I don't need another fandom!!
And just to make things clear: I am a fan of Star Trek 2009 and it's corresponding Alternate Reality (with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto). I am not a fan of The Original Series (with William Shatner), though I may be a minor fan of Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy). Which could be considered blasphemy by the Die Hard Trekkies but oh well. I like who I like.
A little early but I don't want to forget to greet her and knowing me, I'll forget on the day itself. Happiest of Birthdays to
writinginct. May your day be filled with love, laughter and joy and may the rest of your year be filled with the same and also one of good health.
