This has been a long time coming, I know. 12 weeks if you want to be specific. Was it worth the wait?
Lead the Way - 025 - A Perfect Date
Emily was slowly starting to regret her impulsive decision to ask JJ out. It wasn’t so much the fear of rejection, or worse, the fear of starting something new to then be heartbroken when it ended. Emily had more pressing problems to deal with than such trivialities.
Where should she take JJ? To a bar? To a movie? Which one? Or to a show? Maybe to the opera? Would she feel comfortable there? A club? A gay one? To a Redskins game? Would that be too unoriginal?
As her thoughts rampaged through her head, Emily wondered if she was losing her mind. This obsessive behavior was new to her. Maybe she should blow this whole thing off as long as she still had a shot at sanity.
And then it hit her!

So far, the evening had been nice. Not the extraordinary mind blowing first date the media liaison had expected given her deep feelings for the other woman, but nice. It wasn’t awkward or weird or uncomfortable either. To be frank it felt more like eating dinner with a friend - which was sort of a relief. JJ had already given up hope that this night could end with her waking up next to the brunette the following morning. She simply enjoyed the company, the good food and the view. After dinner, Emily paid quickly and led her to her Prius. JJ wondered if the profiler was uncomfortable or trying to be considerate getting her home before eleven.
She was surprised to see that Emily did not drive her home. Nor to Emily’s place.
“Where are we going?”
“Do you have a list?”
“A list?”
“A list of things you won’t do because of what we saw during a case.”
“Yes.”
“Do you have a list of things you want to do because of what we saw during a case?”
“Yes.”
“This is on the second list.”
JJ knew she wouldn’t find out where she was being taken, but there was no reason to be afraid. She was with Emily. The car slowed down and came to a halt in front of a dark building that the blonde couldn’t make out.
“What are we doing here?”
“We’re going for a walk. Wait here.” The smile on Emily’s face was so contagious JJ couldn’t help but return it. From the car, she saw that Emily walked over to the door and was talking to a man holding a flashlight. What the Hell was going on?
Emily came back and JJ got out of the car. The air was chilly and she quickly wrapped her coat around her.
“Do you trust me, JJ?” Taken aback by this sudden change in tone she just nodded. Emily smiled again and put a blindfold on her date.
“Hey, what…?”
“Shhh.” JJ felt a hand reaching for hers and immediately held on to it.
“We’re going to walk for a bit now and you’re not allowed to peek. I’ll tell you when it’s okay to take the blindfold off. I assure you, you won’t regret it. Ok?”
“Ok.” The blonde whispered back, intrigued. Emily led her for a couple of minutes and JJ never even brushed against anything. She had no idea where they were but she knew she was about to find out when Emily told her to stop.
She let go of JJ’s hand and stepped behind her. Slowly the blindfold was removed. JJ couldn’t believe her eyes. She was standing in the middle of a Park. All around her were trees and flowers and bushes in all shapes and forms. The air was no longer chilly but sultry. As she looked closer the agent finally saw them.
Hundreds and hundreds of butterflies swirling around, dancing through the air.
Emily handed her a small flashlight without saying a single word. Breathless JJ asked:
“Where are we?”
“We’re at the butterfly pavilion of the Smithsonian.” Emily’s breath against her neck was almost overwhelming. JJ licked her lips in an attempt to regain control over her body. Suddenly she realized something and frowned. She turned around and found herself nose to nose with the brunette.
“Don’t they usually close at 5:30?” The innocent question was breathed ever so lightly and Emily’s knees weakened. It was completely irrelevant what they were talking about; both women had forgotten everything around them.
“Not for one of their most generous donors, they don’t.” Emily smiled as JJ’s eyes raced over her face, trying to take in all at once. As soon as she spotted those white, wonderful teeth she could no longer hold back. This time neither woman pulled back as their lips finally expressed what they were unable to say.
“Ahem…” the sudden noise made Emily and JJ realize where they still were. Taking a step back from the blonde she said:
“JJ, I would like you to meet Craig. He is…”
“Oh my God! Are you Craig Brunetti?” The blue eyes seemingly popped out of JJ’s head.
“I most certainly am,” the man said with a proud smirk.
“Oh my God!” The blonde turned towards Emily and explained: “He is like THE expert on Lepidoptera!”
“So I’ve heard.” Emily was charmed by JJ’s excitement. It reminded her of children opening their Christmas presents. For the next couple of hours Agent Jareau and Craig Brunetti debated the behavior, wing patterns and evolution of butterflies. Although none of this was of any interest to the profiler she couldn’t stop smiling.
